Xbox Help pleez

I need help with my Xbox. There's nothing wrong with it, I just want to change the sound setup I have.
Technical Stuff. Not my forte.
Right now I have my RCAs plugged right into the TV, which only has a mono input (I think I just used all the technical jargon I know in one sentence there 
), so the red end is just chillin.
I want to plug the sound cables into some speakers.
But I don't have any computer speakers or anything with direct RCA inputs.
So my dad pulls out these like 14x6" speakers that have standard speaker cables on the back. So we figure all we need to do is run to Radio Shack and pick up something that will make that into and RCA jack.
Then I realize this: How will I control the volume?? Dad says it might be an unamplified signal ... whatever that means ...
SO
If you have any idea how to solve this, or any other better suggestions than my current plan, please PLEASE let me know. This has been bothering me for a long time.

EASIEST way is to get a cheap amp.
Cheapest way is to live with it unfortunately.

Side note: Amps sound WAY better than TV speakers etc. I doubt you'll ever be able to go back :B

So proud of myself.
I have a new problem tho ... I think the amp might be giving off a signal that is discoloring a fist-sized spot at the bottom center of my TV ... then again my TV is old and maybe its just giving up the ghost ...

What's the TV?
It's possible that the EMI given off by the amp is interfereing with the TV, tried it without the amp being on?

Thats the weirdest part, even when I turn the amp off, the spot stays! I have no idea what is going on ...

Im assuming you have a CRT tv. (old style tube tv)
Old skool CRT's use magnets to focus and direct the beam of light onto the phosphor coated screen. Anything putting out large electric currents, will distract this style of tv. If you want an expensive laugh, get a powerful magnet and try yourself. hours of fun. Anyway. the soultion sadly is to move the amp -away-. You should see the spot decrease and disappear. A short test, is to turn everything off but the tv. it shoudl go away.
